Hadassah's Dr. Liran Tiosano Elected Chair of Israeli Retina Society

Dr. Liran Tiosano, a cataract and retina surgeon at the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), has been elected chair of the Israeli Retina Society, the professional body representing retina specialists in Israel.

In his new role, Dr. Tiosano will lead efforts to advance retinal surgery and retinal disease care in Israel, strengthen clinical and research collaborations, train the next generation of specialists and promote the integration of advanced technologies and AI-based tools in ophthalmology.

“I am excited by the appointment and deeply committed to the role,” said Dr. Tiosano. “In my view, we must set key goals for strengthening the professional community of retina specialists in Israel, advancing technological innovation and making the most advanced technologies and surgical techniques accessible for the benefit of patients.”

Dr. Tiosano brings extensive clinical and surgical experience to the role. His work includes complex cataract surgery, advanced intraocular lens implantation, retinal detachment surgery and treatment of macular holes, epiretinal membranes, diabetic retinal complications and complex ocular trauma.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Tiosano is an active researcher and senior lecturer on the research track at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on advanced retinal imaging, AI-based models for diagnosing and predicting retinal diseases, particularly age-related macular degeneration, and personalized medicine. He has also been involved in medical technology ventures, registered a patent in retinal surgery and published dozens of scientific papers in leading international journals.

Dr. Tiosano earned his MD from the Goldman Medical School at Ben-Gurion University, alongside a master’s degree in Health Systems Management. He completed his ophthalmology residency at HMO, followed by a fellowship in retinal surgery at the University of Ottawa in Canada and further training at the Doheny Eye Institute at UCLA.

“I am confident that together with my colleagues in the Retina Society, we will move forward and take the field to new heights,” he said.
