During a missile attack, the medical team at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus performed a critical procedure on an infant in a NICU relocated 50 feet below ground.
A feeding tube was inserted directly into the infant’s stomach through the abdominal wall, allowing the baby to receive nutrition safely when regular feeding is not possible.
The urgent procedure was successfully carried out in the temporary NICU, now located 50 feet below ground. The unit has been relocated to what is typically a pre-operative area, where the most vulnerable babies were moved at the start of the war with Iran. Transporting each infant to the fortified underground space was a significant undertaking, requiring a team of five doctors and nurses, along with incubators and monitoring equipment.
Dr. Liron Birimberg-Schwartz and Dr. Ira Erlichman led the NICU team.
“The little boy is doing just fine,” said Dr. Erlichman. “For us also, working in a safe environment allows us to concentrate while the sirens are blaring outside.”
